Long live the King

The Thai government has blocked over 2,300 websites in 2008.

Most of the blocked sites were apparently offending Thailand's 81-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The crime of offending the monarch, lese majeste, is punishable by imprisonment of up to 15 years. This fact isn't usually mentioned on tourist brochures, so keep your revolutionary mouth shut if you ever visit Thailand, although most tourists traveling to Thailand don't (willingly) speak of their experiences, anyway.

More than 90 percent of the banned sites are registered abroad, and apart from the King-bashing sites, some were banned for threatening national security and spreading pornographic content. Thailand has experienced a turbulent year when it comes to politics, and the number of banned sites is on the rise.
