7-inch Eee PC to die quiet death

Asus is set to phase out the 7-inch Eee PC models and is not looking at doing any new models with this screen size. At the same time, Asus has no plans to introduce any Eee PC-branded Atom powered machines with displays larger than 10.2-inches.

Asus will focus on a smaller range of models with 8.9 and 10.2-inch displays, as these are the best selling models. Expect most of these to come with Windows XP Home, as Asus is seeing about an 80/20 split between Windows XP and Linux machines in terms of sales.

3G support will be added to some models during next year, although we don't have any specific details of which models at the moment. Asus has also been talking to Intel and Microsoft about the 1GB memory limitation for netbooks and hopefully, this should be lifted sometime during next year.

Unlike Dell and MSI, Asus isn't considering using the Z-series of Atom processors for an Eee PC, despite the fact that Asus is going to try to make more models that weigh in at around 1kg. There will also be a product refresh in Q3, as Intel is set to unveil a new Atom platform around IDF fall, which should see a new range of netbooks not only from Asus, but also from its competitors.

With the changes to its product line-up and a more focused product range, Asus is expecting to topple Acer once more when it comes to netbook sales.
