Apple ups the legal ante

You say tit, and I say tat

The legal team at Apple have fired off a countersuit against Qualcomm, claiming that the chip firms' Snapdragon semiconductors use elements of its own patents.

It is purely a coincidence that many of Qualcomm's chips find their way into Android smartphones.

The Apple law suit comes after Qualcomm sued it last July for using elements of its battery life patents.

The latest law suit accuses Qualcomm of infringing several Apple battery life patents.

Specifically, Apple alleges that its patents are breached on Snapdragon 800 and 820 chips.

That all sounds tangled enough but the legal spat between the two giants has a flavour of the legal battle between Jarndyce and Jarndyce in the Charles Dickens novel Bleak House.

Other lawsuits are pending over patent royalties while Qualcomm also complained to the US International Trade Commission that iPhones imported into the country with Intel chips inside infringe on its rights.
