Microsoft has reacted angrily to news stories that say it knew that its Xbox360 scratched punters disks.

Yesterday we reported details of a court case where Microsoft employees said that they knew that the machines scratched disks before the consoles were released. However, a Microsoft spokesman responded to the filing today by saying the disk scratching issue was not unique to the Xbox 360.

Its argument was that the Xbox 360 is designed so that it will not damage a game disk as long as the console is not moved while the disc is spinning. Too much movement of any game console, not just Xbox 360, can cause scratches on a disk.

Microsoft's answer is to put a warning on the face of the disk tray, which the user has to physically remove before the initial use of the system. It also has warnings posted online and in hard copy instruction manuals.
