Microsoft has expanded its Exchange ActiveSync IP licensing program and given out shedloads more techie documents in a bit to increase the development of prototype applications that link to its Exchange Server and Exchange ActiveSync-enabled mobile phones.

Exchange ActiveSync allows mobiles to receive wireless push e-mail, as well as sync calendars, contacts and other tasks. Companies can use it to manage wireless devices and enact security policies.

Protocols for the software have been posted on the Microsoft Developer Network and expanded the licensing program.  Microsoft has also laid down the law on the steps and licensing terms that are needed when other companies want to commercialize the ActiveSync applications.

The big idea is that if it can get more companies producing software for the mobile platform it will have more to go on when it tries to take on Palm and the Google Android.
