Criminals take advantage of economic slide


A panel of experts from the cyber security industry said that criminals are taking advantage of the fact that the industry is no longer buying their products and governments are not paying coppers enough to arrest people.

McAfee headed a panel of experts which has just made the startling conclusion that the criminals are winning in the battle against law enforcement. Dave Marcus, director of security research and communications for McAfee Avert Labs, said that cybercriminals took advantage of economic messaging quickly and cashed in on consumer anxiety.

However, governments, which are focusing on internal economic hardships, are cutting funding to cyber crime efforts. As a result, McAfee predicts that in the fourth quarter of 2008 cybercrime will continue to escalate in severity.  Since the fact that spam and cyber crime has been rising ever since the introduction of the computer this statement is a bit of a no brainer.

The company said there was a shortage of computer specialists in law enforcement. And those who are specially trained are often hired away to high-salaried jobs at private companies. The McAfee report said Russia and China remain the largest safe havens for cybercriminals, while Brazil and Moldova have become the fastest-growing countries to be most often blamed for cybercrime.
