Transmeta has had a strange history and it ended as oddly, as the company who has been rumored to be taken over by a wide range of other companies over the years has finally been aquired, but not by a company on anyone's radar.

Novafora, a U.S. company that develops digital video processors, bought out Transmeta for US$255.6 million in cash. We've never heard of the company before and it's likely that a lot of people haven't. What's even stranger is that the company doesn't even list any of its products on its Website.

We're not certain why a company that specializes in digital video processing hardware would be interested in Transmeta's assets, although the press release talks about power management technology. We'll have to wait and see what Novafora comes up with, but until then it's all of a bit of mystery.

In related news, AMD has entered into a non-exclusive patent license agreement with Transmeta, which will see AMD transferring 700,000 shares back to Transmeta. There was no mention in the press release with regard to what this patent license agreement involves.
