Sub $200 players only the start, according to sources

As we have
been telling you the past couple of weeks, the price on standalone Blu-ray players continues to drop, with sub $200 Blu-ray players becoming the norm and with older models fetching prices below $150.

Wal-Mart is now stocking the Magnavox NB500MG9 Profile 1.1 Blu-ray player for $198, confirmed by our sources. According to several sources, Wal-Mart will drop the price on the player to an unbelievable $128 as part of their Black Friday promotion this year, or so we have been told.

While a good number of the players that we are seeing are Blu-ray Profile 1.1 players and in many cases they don’t even offer an Ethernet port, they still are able to play Blu-ray discs; and right now in order to up the Blu-ray adoption rate, this is all that seems to matter.

Yesterday, close-out Internet retailer Woot.com was blowing out the Memorex MVBD2510 for $139.99, which was again only a Profile 1.1 Blu-ray player, but definitely a sign of the aggressive nature of what we can continue to expect headed into the home stretch of the holiday shopping season.

We still expect the best is yet to come, with the possibility of seeing Blu-ray players very close to the $100 mark for Black Friday blow-outs, according to our sources. Still, the middle-of-the-road players that feature Profile 1.3 support are likely to continue to hover in the $200 price range.

If you are finally looking to make the jump to Blu-ray it would appear that this holiday season will present you with a lot of options. Still, we recommend that you examine your potential player purchases closely to make sure that you get all of the features that you want and need before plunking down your hard earned money.
