AV outfit says it is nothing to do with us

The AV world is a bit shocked by the arrest of Kaspersky Lab’s security expert Ruslan Stoyanov on charges of treason.

According to the national newspaper Kommersant, the head of investigations at the multinational cybersecurity provider has been banged up in pre-trial detention, alongside Sergei Mikhailov from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), since December 2016.

Stoyanov has a lot of expertise in distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks and held top positions within Moscow’s Ministry of Interior between 2000 and 2006.

Kaspersky Lab says that the arrest has nothing to do with the company. Stoyanov is under investigation for a period before he was hired at Kaspersky Lab.

The work of Kaspersky Lab’s Computer Incidents Investigation Team is unaffected by these developments.

Stoyanov has worked closely with Russian authorities on several high-profile cyber investigations and done quite a bit of work turning over cyber criminals.

The FSB’s Sergei Mikhailov was deputy chief of the agency’s Information Security Centre and has been accused of receiving payments from foreign companies.

Coppers are investigating the FSB Information Security Centre and its ‘connection to private companies cooperating with the division in the field of cybercrime expert studies’.
