Montreal-based tool developer dumped by Avid

Softimage is not a name generally known by those outside of the game development community, but the power house is perhaps best known for the XSI 3D animation tools that are used to develop a variety of entertainment titles. They are used by a variety of developers primarily for the development of entertainment software.

The Softimage unit, which was part of Avid, will be acquired by Autodesk in a deal that is worth $35 million according to reports. The company will continue to be based in Montreal and develop the XSI 3D animation tools, while also working with Autodesk to incorporate some of its technology into future Autodesk products as well.

Softimage will be part of the Autodesk Media and Entertainment group within the company. Softimage offers Autodesk a lot of synergy within their current products and should be able to be aligned with the company’s other product offerings. It would seem that this would be a better fit for Softimage long-term than to have continued as part of Avid.

Details on what they expect to do moving forward should be forthcoming, but it is expected that a lot of the XSI technology will find its way into 3ds max at some point in the future.
