MT6625 shortage to end after earthquake

MediaTek and its manufacturing partner TSMC are back to being flat out in Taiwan bringing to an end the MT6625 communications chip shortage.

Production on the island suffered in February 2016 when a severe earthquake struck southern Taiwan, killing 117 people and  damaging buildings and infrastructure.

Damage to its plant impacted on the TSMC’s ability to manufacturer the MediaTek MT6625 family of communication chips although the TSMC was hoping to restore full production by June.

According to Android Headlines while TSMC’s factories may not be working to full capacity yet supply issues with MediaTek chips will be over in the third quarter.

The MediaTek MT6625 is hotly in demand despite the shortage of the components and MediaTek sees this as good news because it will be able to get more chips to the market in the next quarter. While the prices of the MT6625 will be reduced the design was getting a bit old anyway and prices should have fallen.

The impact on MediaTek should be good news with industry experts expecting the company to post 30 per cent revenue growth in the second quarter of 2016 and a further double-digit increase in the third quarter.
