Not what we'd call pretty

It's amazing how many companies out there have hooked onto the netbook trend and NEC is now the latest company to join the low-cost notebook race. However, this has to be one of the ugliest models out there, as it's nothing more than a square slab of plastic.

With design being one of the few things that netbook manufacturers can compete with, it's really a shame to see something as plain and almost ugly as this. The 8.9-inch NEC LaVie Light looks like something from the dark ages of notebook design.

The display offers 1,024x600 resolution, as with most other netbooks it has a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processors, the Intel 945GSE chipset, 1GB of DDR2 memory, a 160GB 5,400rpm hard drive, 802.11b/g WiFi, 10/100Mbit Ethernet, three USB 2.0 ports, a memory card reader, a 1.3Megapixel webcam and Windows XP.

At 250x176.5x36.5mm (WxDxH) at its widest point and 1.17kg is quite chunky for an 8.9-inch model, as well, and this seems to be with a meager three cell battery. It seems to be available as of right now in Japan for a whopping €485.

You can find more details here in Japanese.
