Failed on some boxes into endless reboot loop

Apple pushed out the 2.2 update for the AppleTV, but at least some owners were in for a surprise, as the update caused their AppleTV devices to enter an endless reboot loop.

The 2.2 update contains a few new features, such as HD TV Show Playback/Purchase, eMusic Video Playlists, Genius playlist support, On-The-Go playlist support, and a new Standby Option.

Beyond the small collection of new features, the 2.2 update also contained a variety of bug fixes and security updates, as well. The specifics of these updates are largely unknown.

Still, the fun did not end there, as the 2.2 update seems to have made some AppleTV devices enter an endless reboot cycle, while other seem to have been able to upgrade with no problem. The only option if you are stuck in this endless reboot loop is to restore the AppleTV to factory settings and try the upgrade again; and for many it seems to work.

No one really has any clue what happened or what went wrong, but returning the factory default settings and trying again seems to be the only option we have found at this point, and from what we have heard this does not always work, either. Some AppleTV users have suggested that they had to return to the factory default settings a couple of times before they were able to get the update to take.

It is unknown at the present time if there is any way to block the update other than unplugging your AppleTV from its network connection. We suspect that Apple is aware of the problem and should offer a fix at some point soon.
