CCFL be gone

Dell is planning to completely drop CCFL backlit screens in its notebook displays in favor of more efficient LED baclklit units by 2010.

As of this December, two thirds of Lattitude E-series machines will ship with LED backlit screens, and LEDs will be included in several Precision series mobile workstations. LED baclit screens offer a number of advantages, such as use of more environmetaly frinedly materials in construction and significant power savings which should extend battery life in notebooks.

Dell expects 80 percent of its notebooks will feature LED backlit screens by the end of 2009, while in 2010 all Dell notebooks will use the new technology.
