Fallout from Ashley Madison hack

by on24 August 2015

Blackmail and suicide

The hackers who published the data from Ashley Madison hack appear to have taken more collateral damage than they expected.

Already blackmailers have been sending out extortion letters demanding bitcoin ransoms to people who appear on the list.

One San Antonio police captain has also killed himself after his email address was found among the data leak.

It is unclear whether he committed suicide because of the email leak or not, as there has to be a police inquiry first.

The suicide was first reported by the San Antonio Express News which doesn't identify the person in question.

IB Times says there are 99,157 accounts located in the City of San Antonio in Texas which has a population of 1.4 million, making it the 14th biggest city in the world in terms of accounts on the affairs website.

The hackers claimed that they were going to use the hack to shut down Ashley Madison which they accused of encouraging loose morals. They originally demanded that the site be closed or they would leak the names. When the site did not close the emails were leaked.

It would appear that the site is still no closer to closing, but a lot of people are suffering.

The email was sent to an undisclosed American by somebody calling themselves as "Team GreyFlay" threatening to expose the person as a user of recently hacked extramarital affair platform Ashley Madison.

The blackmailers have demanded exactly 2.00000054 BTCs, to be payable within a week from the American victim. Otherwise, Team GreyFlay has threatened to find his information among Ashley Madison user data and share it with his spouse. GreyFlay poinedt out bitcoin ATMs and suggest LocalBitcoins.com where the victim can buy bitcoin to pay the ransom.

Of course paying these guys off would not help, as the list is practically public.
