Seagate launches external 4TB 2.5-inch drive

Small but fat

Seagate has launched a chubby 2.5-inch external drive based on 800GB platters, with a total capacity of 4TB.

We checked with our resident maths professor and were told that this amounts to five platters per drive, which may sound like a lot, and, well, it is. The drive is very chubby and it’s probably based on the recently announced Spinpoint M10P drive.

This means it simply won’t fit into most 2.5-inch drive bays, but that’s hardly relevant in an external drive. The good news is that it can be powered by a standard USB plug, which means you won’t have to carry around a power brick to bring 4TB of data on the road.

The drive also comes with 200GB of Microsoft’s OneDrive cloud storage for two years. It’s expected to go on sale in a few weeks with a price tag of about $240, depending on the market.
