Bank of Ireland
has confirmed that several thousands of its customers have been affected by a credit card scam.

The Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation has seized 47 bogus chip and pin devices which were used to copy the credit and debit card details. The details were then transmitted to a centralised system, for the criminals' own purposes. Gardaí believe there are more fiddled with machines and are warning retailers to check them and they are 30 to 50 grams heavier.

The gang fitted devices to sales terminals while pretending to carry out maintenance work on behalf of banks. The Irish Payment Services Organization says any losses by customers will be reimbursed.

Retailers told customers to check the identity of anyone claiming to be carrying out work on behalf of their bank.
