Intel has launched a new mobile chipset specifically for ultra portable and thin and light notebooks called the GS45. It will retain most of the features of the GM45 chipset, such as the GMA 4500MHD graphics and DDR3 and DDR2 memory support.

The new GS45 chipset takes up less space as it measures 25x27 and 16x16mm (for the MCH and ICH) compared to 34x34 and 31x31mm for the GM45 chipset.

The GS45 is compatible with all mobile Core 2 processors with bus speeds of up to 1,066MHz and it supports discrete PCIe x16 graphics cards as well as PCIe x1 add-on cards using the Mini card form factor.

In related news Intel also announced eight new small form factor CPUs which measure 22x22mm compared to 35x35mm for Intel's normal mobile Core 2 processors and all models have a TDP of less than 35W.
