Apple adds HomeKit to AppleTV

Apple quietly added the HomeKit framework with the latest software update for third-generation AppleTVs. HomeKit is Apple’s new home automation technology that makes it easy to control home automation systems no matter what communication method they use.

The HomeKit is just the framework that let’s hardware companies focus on the design of good hardware and let companies that focus on software design use the HomeKit framework to make everything talk to each other.

This has been predicted to be quite big down the road with Apple expected to focus on the AppleTV and the licensing of the HomeKit technology where we will see the ability in conjunction with other developed apps to be able to control your temperature, lights, locks, and more with this framework. It is likely that it will be extended so that you can also use your iPad and iPhone to talk to these devices as well.

If Apple gets it right, the days of the Jetson’s might not be that far off after all.
