Lenovo reports strong earnings, record PC market share

Smartphones outsell PCs

Lenovo has bucked the industry trend yet again. The PC vendor reported $10.4 billion in revenue last quarter, roughly 18 percent more than a year ago.

Lenovo says it now commands a record high PC market share. It is still by far the world’s biggest PC vendor and last quarter it shipped 14.5 million PCs. Strong sales were reported in EMEA and American markets.

However, Lenovo is also making headway in mobile. The company shipped 2.3 million tablets last quarter and its overall shipments of smart devices were up 28 percent. For the first time ever Lenovo sold more smartphones than PCs in a quarter. The company shipped 15.8 million phones, up 39 percent. Lenovo is currently the biggest smartphone vendor in China with an estimated 13 million handsets scooped up by Chinese consumers.

"This has been a quarter of milestones for Lenovo — record PC share, a number three ranking in worldwide tablets for the first time, and an even stronger number four global smartphone position," said Lenovo CEO Yuanqing Yang.

It remains to be seen whether Lenovo can replicate its smartphone success in other regions. So far the company has focused much of its efforts on China and there are hardly any Lenovo phones in Europe and the Americas.
