Samsung Display to Build $1bn Plant in Vietnam

by on03 July 2014

Production to start next year?

Samsung Display has received approval to construct a $1 billion plant in Vietnam.

The plant will be located in Bac Ninh province and it will handle display module assembly. It will be the first plant of its kind in Vietnam (and the region).

Interestingly, Samsung says the plant should start production “sometime in 2015,” which gives it just 18 months to build, test and open a $1bn facility.

According to Reuters, Samsung wants to boost its ability to supply displays to Samsung Electronics and other clients. Vietnam was chosen due to its relatively low labour costs. Assembling display modules is labour intensive and Samsung is hoping to reduce costs by tapping Vietnamese workers rather than South Korean workers.
