China has not banned Microsoft after all

by on01 July 2014

Smoke and mirrors

It appears that the Chinese government is not rushing to kill off Microsoft office as it had been widely reported.

The Chinese made a big thing about how it was moving to Open source software and will be replacing Office as soon as possible. The reason given was those evil US spies who might have installed a backdoor in the software.

However Microsoft has already issued a statement saying that there is no truth at all in such an allegation. It pointed out that the claim was made by “unnamed” government sources but there were no indications in China that any ban was happening.

Indeed software procurement behind the bamboo curtain was exactly the same as it ever was, despite the sabre rattling from unnamed government sources.

The suggestion is that the government just made the statement for propaganda purposes and has no real intension of carrying through with it.
