Phone networks hit by Southern California quake
User problems
Phone networks fell over after the earthquake that hit Southern California yesterday, but not because any lines were actually cut. Apparently, immediately after the quake, phone networks crashed as too many people tried calling at the same time.
Verizon Communications said there was an initial peak of blocked calls after the quake, but it appeared to be the result of people getting on their phones to check with family members, friends and colleagues.
AT&T said despite no damage to its infrastructure networks it experienced congestion. It said that if there were any emergencies people should keep retrying a landline phone number, or using text messaging on a mobile phone.
The 11:42 a.m. quake measured 5.4 on the Richter scale.
