OK Cupid bans homophobic Mozilla browser

This is not April 1

One of the bigger online dating sites OK Cupid has been telling Firefox users that they can’t use the site because of Mozilla’s anti-gay CEO. In what we thought was an April 1 joke, OK was giving its users the message that Firefox browsers could not be used on the site because Mozilla's new CEO, Brendan Eich, is an opponent of equal rights for gay couples.

OK Cupid said that it had devoted the last ten years to bringing people together. “If individuals like Eich had their way, then roughly 8 per cent of the relationships we've worked so hard to bring about would be illegal,” the site said.

“Equality for gay relationships is personally important to many of us here at OkCupid. But it's professionally important to the entire company. OkCupid is for creating love. Those who seek to deny love and instead enforce misery, shame, and frustration are our enemies, and we wish them nothing but failure,” the site said.

Opposition the appointment has been mounting since Eich's appointment on March 24th. Activist developers almost immediately started boycotting Firefox and board members quit. Staff also have been taking to twitter to complain. Mozilla has been distancing itself like crazy from Eich’s stance on gay marriage saying it supports equality for all.
