Mozilla in revolt over anti-gay CEO

Brendan Eich in trouble over Prop 8 support

It seems that after taking the job as the new Mozilla CEO coding legend Brendan Eich is finding his past catching up with him. A few years ago the creator of JavaScript wrote a cheque for $1000 to supporters of the anti-gay wedding law with the promising title Prop 8.

When he was appointed CEO at Mozilla there were rumblings from some developers about his support of the anti-gay law and now it seems that Mozilla employees are now taking part in a Twitter revolt. The message is that that he should step down.

There were two tweets from Mozilla Open Badges project lead Chris McAvoy. "I love @mozilla but I'm disappointed this week,"

"@mozilla stands for openness and empowerment, but is acting in the opposite way." He then made a more pronounced declaration: "I'm an employee of @mozilla and I'm asking @brendaneich to step down as CEO."

Within minutes, many other Mozilla employees followed suit, using similar language or copying each other's statements outright. Mozilla Festival curator Chloe Vareldi, partnerships lead John Bevan, designer Jessica Klein, and engagement team member Sydney Moyer all signed up.

It is rare to see this sort of thing in the business world. It will be interesting to see if it has any effect.
