McAfee experiment shows there is no stopping them

An experiment
run by the insecurity outfit, McAfee, has shown that there isn't a bat's chance in hell of stopping spammers using legal means.

Although the CAN-SPAM law states that people receiving spam can opt to be taken off lists, it would appear that makes the situation worse. McAfee gave out 50 computers to people who agreed to reply to every spam they got asking to be taken off the spammers' lists.

However, it reports that instead of getting less spam, the unwanted email increased dramatically. Most of the spam that did not go away was the illegal stuff, such as bank-account phishing scam, Nigerian bank schemes, offers for medication, and adult content. Each volunteer got 70 spam messages arriving in their in-box each day, with men receiving about 15 more per day than women.

It seems that if you ever were daft enough to enter a home address in reply to a spammer you will get huge amounts of extra spam.
