The PC market doesn’t appear to be recovering and Gartner now expects the market to decline 7.6 per cent this year. Tablets seem to be the main culprit, as an increasing number of consumers is transitioning to tablets and other ultraportable devices.

More than 341 million PCs were shipped last year, but Gartner expects the shipments will drop to 315 million this year and keep sliding until they eventually hit 271 million in 2017. Meanwhile tablet shipments are expected to double this year, going from 116 million to 197 million units. Mobile phone shipments are also up, but the market is maturing, so growth should remain in single digit territory.

The ultramobile segment is also expected to do well. Just 9.8 million ultramobiles were shipped last year, but shipments will more than double this year and by 2017 they will hit 96 million.

Android and iOS/Mac OS are expected to gain plenty of market share over the next couple of years, while Windows will see rather slow growth.
