Imagination Technologies remains upbeat

by on12 March 2013

500 million GPUs shipped last year

Imagination Technologies, the plucky British chip designer behind PowerVR graphics, says it is on track to meet its targets for its current financial year, which ends in April.

PowerVR SGX graphics cores can be found in a wide variety of ARM based SoCs, but they are best known as Apple’s GPU of choice. Apple uses PowerVR SGX graphics in all A-series SoCs, from the A4 to the A6X.

However, there are some uncertainties about licensing deals, as some of its partners are in the middle of structural and business changes. In any case, Imagination is confident that more than 500 million chips using its graphics cores will ship by the end of its financial year.

Imagination hopes it will see strong sales in the future, courtesy of booming smartphone and tablet sales, as well as smart TVs from Sony and LG. However, what we really want to see from Imagination is PowerVR SGX 6 cores, codenamed Rogue. The first designs should be ready by now, but we still don't know when they will find their way into new SoCs.
