$4 million this week

The Motion Picture Association of America seems to be doing better in its war against piracy than the Recording Industry Association of America, whose legal strategy has been running aground lately.

The MPAA has won $4 million from two linking sites that it believes profited from enabling copyright infringement. ShowStash.net and Cinematube.net didn't host any of these files, but both were found guilty of contributory copyright infringement.

This is a little different from the RIAA's strategy which has attempted to go for sites claiming they were doing the pirating. If you have not ever heard of ShowStash or Cinematube, you are not alone. They were tiny and would have been strapped to find the cash for a lawyer.

However, the strategy is particularly clever. It means that the MPAA builds up case law against P2P sites, does not have to have huge legal bills and bad publicity, and still gets what it wants. Meanwhile, other P2P sites have the fear of god put into them and close down before the writ arrives.
