Jobs biopic gets negative reviews

by on28 January 2013

Even good old Woz says it’s crap

Oh dear. It looks like the new Steve Jobs isn’t getting any positive reviews and poor reviews don’t sound very Apple-ish.

The Daily Mail is reporting that Sundance audiences can’s stay awake through the new Joshua Micael Stern biopic and even the great Seve Wozniak recently said the script was crap and that he turned down an offer to work on the flick. Variety believes the film lacks “oomph” while the Hollywood Reporter describes it as a two-hour commercial.

The movie stars Ashton Kutcher as Jobs and Josh Gad as Woz. Critics argue the cast bears a striking resemblance to the men they play in the movie, but that doesn’t appear to be enough. Mind you, Kutcher already has plenty of experience sliding into slots vacated by 80s icons, like Bruce Willis and Charlie Sheen, so he should feel at home with the Jobs role. However, for some reason the character he plays in the movie is a lot like Jobs at launch events and apparently that’s not what he was like in real life.

So what went wrong? How could the crew have possibly cocked things up so bad? Jobs was an eccentric Silicon Valley icon, yet they managed to depict him as a boring salesman. His character in Martin Burke’s low-budget Pirates of Silicon Valley, was gripping, complex and most of all, human. But for some reason, the Kutcher character seems like he’s making a sales pitch, and a bad one at that.
