LTE subscribership to double in 2013

by on23 January 2013

100 to 200 million

LTE is the new black and IHS iSuppli estimates the number of global LTE subscribers will more than double in 2013.

The number of LTE subscribers is projected to double by the end of the year, with an estimated 198.1 million users, up from 92.3 million last year.

LTE launched in 2010 and it was adopted by just 612,000 users, but in 2011 the number surged to 13.2 million subscribers and then it went up to 92.3 million in 2012, up by nearly 600 percent. More than a billion users are expected by 2016.

IHS analyst Wayne Lam believes some issues will be encountered along the way, such as spectrum fragmentation, but he’s still upbeat.

"Overall, however, the LTE space will be less worried about rifts or divisions in technology, and more concerned with laying the foundation for sustained growth across the entire LTE landscape," said Lam.
