Sun changed its mind

Kaj Arnö, Vice President of Community Relations, on his blog has issued a release that no part of the very popular MySQL Server will be partially closed, as we previously reported here.

According to the blog, MySQL Server is, and will always remain, fully functional and open source. This is good news for all those people who have protested and threatened to move to competing SQL solutions.

In addition, it is reported that in the coming version 6, users will have a functional backup solution, MyISAM driver with encryption and compression backup features will be also open source.

We are glad that Sun kept the current business model in which if you want to save time you would purchase their professional service, and if you want to save money you can invest your time in developing and implementing MySQL solutions.

MySQL will continue to experiment with business models, and with what is offered for the community and what is offered exclusivly for paying customers.
