Research in Motion (RIM), based in Waterloo, Ontario Canada, the manufacturer of the BlackBerry series of smart phones, has announced that it is expanding its research and development into a new facility in Bochum, Germany.

The plant is scheduled to open by this summer and initially will employ 140 people, with an eventual employment expansion to 500 people.  During the first year of operations at the new facility RIM will spend a projected $45 million.

RIM said that the new location will focus on development of hardware and software for the BlackBerry, as well as developing new applications and handsets.  RIM must keep its focus on such development in order to remain competitive with the iPhone and other mobile technology applications.

To date RIM has continued to remain profitable and even beat analysts’ predictions for profitability.  The BlackBerry models are currently RIM’s flagship mobile phone line.
