Obama and Romney fight over Jobs

by on19 July 2012

Steve Jobs not people who actually work

Desperate to make people stop thinking about his dodgy tax returns and involvement in companies long after he quit, Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney tried to pick a fight over the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Romney said that President Obama didn’t believe that Steve Jobs built Apple. Now with Europeans such a statement, even if it were true, would not get you any votes.
But in the US, Jobs is seen as an example of proof that there are no poor people in the country, just potential millionaires who are waiting for their for their first big break.

Romney told a town hall in Ohio that Obama was anti-business and to say what he does is to claim that Steve Jobs didn't build Apple Computer or that Bill Gates didn't build Microsoft or that Henry Ford didn't build Ford Motor Company or that Ray Croc didn't build McDonald's. He said that it means that Obama is out touch with America and needs to be replaced, while Romney is so in touch with business and corporates he is the man for the job.

It is all based on a President Obama’s speech on Friday where he said “If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that.  Somebody else made that happen.” OK it is all out of context but tragically for Romney, Obama is right. If Jobs had not had a good chum called Woz, he would still be smoking weed with his dropout mates. If Jobs had not got a top designer called Jonathan Ive, he would have been stuck for ideas.

Gates did not create the Microsoft empire, which was built on clever ideas from other technology whiz kids. He was just good enough to be in the right place in the right time.
Either way, Jobs cannot be said to have created Apple and Gates cannot be said to have created Microsoft. Both operations were a corporate effort and depended on them for a greater or lesser degree.

Romney has a bit of a problem in that by invoking these sorts of matters he starts to appear like a corporate apologist.
