Amazon to offer $50 consolation credit

Another retailer joined the list of retailers that are trying to provide at least some consolation to HD DVD owners, with Amazon now offering a $50 credit to those that purchased an HD DVD player from them before February 23rd, 2008. This could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on where you stand on the entire HD DVD saga.

Amazon joins BestBuy as another company trying to make nice with customers that were unlucky enough to choose HD DVD as their HD format of choice. Amazon claims in the coupons that they are sending out that they value relationships and sometimes new technologies just don’t work out.

Amazon does impose some restrictions on the use of the $50 credit, but using them for the purchase of HD DVD or Blu-ray movies does not appear to be a problem.
