Patent trolling continues into 2012

From an outsider’s perspective, there is no telling exactly how big Google has become internally over the past decade, and whether or not its patent-trolling empire has become too big for its own good.

Nevertheless, the software giant has managed to acquire yet another vast portfolio of patents, this time coming from IBM. While not as big as previous transactions between the two companies, IBM transferred 188 granted patents and 28 published patent applications to Google in a deal that was officially recorded at the patent office during the last week of 2011. A number of the patents are related specifically to Internet, phone and mobile phone technologies.

Additionally, the patents cover a broad range of topics including presentation software, blade servers, data caching, server load balancing, network performance, video conferencing, email administration, and instant messaging applications.

The folks over at SEO by the Sea have pulled out a few of the patents that appear most relevant to Web, phone, mobile phone technologies and javascript widgets for web browsing purposes. They can be found here.
