Foxconn worker plummets to death

Questions about working conditions persist
Last year a spate of suicides at Foxconn’s facilities in China prompted several NGOs and major companies using Foxconn’s services to question the company's practices and working conditions at its sprawling manufacturing plants.

Sadly, the disturbing trend appears to be continuing. A 21-year-old Foxconn employee apparently jumped to his death on Tuesday. The total number of suicides reported in Foxconn’s mammoth manufacturing plants last year was and the company announced plans to improve working conditions. Foxconn even employed safety nets, literally, to prevent depressed workers from taking their lives.

A Foxconn official told Taiwan’s Commercial times that the death of the latest victim was not related to overworking or pressure, since the 21-year-old only pulled two hours of overtime since he started working at Foxconn’s Shenzen plant last month. Foxconn currently employs about one million workers in China and about half of them are based in its massive Shenzen facility.
