With auctioneer's blessing

The C
hurch of Scientology has a somewhat strange relationship with the auction site, eBay, according to Reality Based Community.

Ex-members of the group, who have been trying to make money back on the equipment they bought from the church, are mysteriously finding their bids deleted. The Church of Scientology is using eBay's Verified Rights Owner ("VeRO") Program to shut down such bids. All it needed to do was submit a form claiming that it was the Intellectual Property rights holder. Since it costs a lot to challenge any ruling on a sale, people trying to sell material just don't bother.

But while theVeRO Program makes a great deal of sense for some types of listings—counterfeit Rolexes and Gucci handbags--it does not necessarily mean that the Church can use it to stop the sales of second-hand e-meters which are not counterfeits and do not violate the Church of Scientology's trademarks, patents, or copyrights.

E-meters are pretty expensive, about $5,000, so it is strange that eBay seems to be blocking their sale on the Church's say so.
