The APX 2500

Nvidia has a  new mobile phone cellular applications processor and has decided to name it APX 2500 . This is a 750MHz ARM 11-based processor manufactured at 65nm, and it has 256kB of L2 cache, integrated graphics and an image processor that supports up to 12 Megapixel camera sensors. The new CPU is three times faster than Nvidia GoForce 6100, which makes a big difference.

It is also capable of decoding stream 720p video and it should draw less power that competiting solutions in doing so. Nvidia claims that the graphics core of the APX 2500 offers performance similar to the GeForce 6-series of desktop GPUs, although it didn't specify which part. Nvidia is expecting retail products using the new CPU to appear some time in the middle of next year and we'll most likely see Windows Mobile powered devices using this new CPU due to Nvidia's close tie-ins with the OS.

Nvidia is also claiming it will have new mobile phone CPUs every year, compared to once every two and a half years as is the case today, from its competitors in the mobile phone CPU market.
