Sony and Sharp doing free Blu-ray bundling

If the words “free” and “Blu-ray” got your attention, then you might be interested to know that both Sony and Sharp are running a promotion that offers you a free Blu-ray player with the purchase of certain Sony or Sharp LCD TVs. The player is free after the $400 rebate, which means the Blu-ray player is free. The instant rebate can be used toward any of Sony’s current Blu-ray player offerings, and if you select the BDP-S300, which retails for US$399, you basically get the player for free, although you must pay the sales tax.

The Sony promotion for the $400 instant rebate is only good on the KDL-46V3000, KDL-46W3000, and KDL-52W3000. These LCD sets retail in the neighborhood of US$2,300 to $3,000.

The Sharp promotion is similar to the Sony promotion, but is only good on the Sharp Aquos D64 series LCD sets that range in price from between $1,700 and $3,000. With the purchase of one of these sets you get the Sharp BD-HP20U Blu-ray player, which normally retails for US$500, free of charge. As far as we can tell at the moment, only Best Buy is running the Sharp promotion, but others may follow.

While these deals are not as good as some of the Toshiba HD DVD player deals, it just shows that companies are trying to entice people into moving to Blu-ray by any means possible. The free player promotion really only makes sense if you happen to be in the market for an LCD TV. In the case of the Sharp promotion, for $1,700 you get the LCD set and the player, which does make it a pretty good deal.
