From open source to mainstream

Sun has announced that it will acquire open source developer MySQL in a deal valued at US$1 billion dollars. MySQL has been a popular alternative that many companies have jumped on due to the low cost and less restrictive nature of MySQL.

Sun says that it will position MySQL in the enterprise IT space that can benefit from the product. Many companies have very large deployments of MySQL already and this deal will put Sun’s marketing muscle behind the popular database.

According to MySQL, over 50,000 copies are downloaded every day and this is a powerful market to be able to tap into. MySQL is very popular in the Web space, with many PHP Web-based engines using MySQL as the backend database software. The combination of MySQL and Sun appears to be very good due to both companies having a strong commitment to open source software. Still, it will be interesting to see if Sun can drive more revenue with MySQL than the firm was able to do on its own.
