Apple kills off Xserve

by on08 November 2010

Had not been updated for three years
After not updating the hardware for three years, Apple has pulled the plug on its Xserve.

Xserve is Apple's server product for large businesses. Apple says it will continue to support the hardware, including warranties and customer service. In its place, Apple is offering a server edition of the MacPro. It will cost $2,999 and have a 2.8 gigahertz quad-core Intel Xeon processor.

It can be configured with up to two 2.93 gigahertz six-core Xeon processors, and up to 32GB of memory. It also has four hard drive bays, and will come with Mac OS X Server Snow Leopard. Not quite sure if this will stack up against PC offerings for large busineses. Rumours are that Apple wants to increase its market share of the commercial sector in the US beyond the 3.6 percent it has now. We say commercial sector, but this is pretty much the “entertainment and publishing business”.

Apple has alson been peddling the iPhone and iPad as enterprise devices, despite the fact that big business wants security on its toys and Apple has refused to supply it.
