Microsoft prepares big patch Tuesday

Tuesday will be a big day for Microsoft as the outfit releases a huge number of patches for its Windows software. More than 16 security bulletins will be issued in one of the biggest fixes in Redmond's history.

There will be 16 security bulletins to cover a total of 49 vulnerabilities in Windows, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office and the .NET framework. This break's August's record of 14 bulletins. That update fixed 34 security holes across a number of products.

This time there will be four critical bulletins, while 10 are ranked as important and two are ranked moderate. All of the critical bulletins address vulnerabilities that could be exploited to permit remote code execution.

The 16 bulletins would bring the total for the year to 86 for Microsoft.
