Open Source deals net fruit

Microsoft
has announced that Fedora 8 can now be integrated into a Microsoft Server 2008 deployment in six steps or less. The move is part of the fruit of Microsoft's various pacts with different Linux companies.

Hyper V is the virtualization environment for Server 2008, and getting Linux to work with it does take a lot of effort. However, a Microsoft spokesman said that the steps needed to get Fedora 8 to "just work" in a virtualized environment via Hyper-V could now be done simply with no special options, kernel arguments or hardware configuration involved.

It is expected that Microsoft will be making more interoperability statements within the next year. Novell, which makes the SUSE Linux that competes with Fedora, has disclosed that Microsoft paid it $355.6 million last year as part of their interoperability partnership.
