Disc makers conservative with investment in Blu-ray


Blu-ray recordable discs are going to need more support if people are going to adopt it; and key to that support is lower prices. CMC Magnetics Chairman, Robert Wong, said, “Taiwan disc makers are conservative over their deployment in next-generation optical disc standards due to high royalty fees and equipment costs.”

While the market has received some much needed stimulation by cutthroat pricing in North America, companies will still have to be conservative, which means that the cost of recordable BD-R media will remain high. The cost of Blu-ray recordable drives and media will continue to be very pricey, and this means it will be several years before the format could go mainstream.
