But software and firmware not ready until early February

The much anticipated and much delayed Optimus keyboard from Art.Lebedev is still on track to ship in February, according to recent information from the developers. While sources have indicated that due to issues with the Philips processor in this expensive OLED keyboard the keyboard would again be delayed are false, and the Optimus will ship on time in February.

According to the latest reports, the unit will ship with only the PC software to start with and the Mac software is still in development and is hopefully on track to be ready in late January. So, you will get delivery of the keyboard in December, but you may not be able to use it fully until the software and firmware development is completed in late January or early February. The product has gained much attention from the tiny OLED screens on the keys that are changeable using software with letters, numbers, symbols, or most importantly, graphics.

To be honest, the entire adventure of bringing the Optimus to market is becoming somewhat of a hand wringing soap opera, and it is hard to follow all of the twists and turns to keep the story straight. Nonetheless, the technology could be where the future of keyboards are headed, and once the price of the technology comes down it could revolutionize keyboard technology. We plan to visit Art.Lebedev and have a first hard look at the Optimus at CES; and hopefully, we can clear up some of the misinformation and give you a first hand report of our impressions of the Optimus keyboard.
