EU rejects mobile TV standard
Ignores Nokia calls
The European Union has rejected a Nokia-backed mobile TV standard for Europe.
The European Commission had asked all 27 EU governments to support DVB-H, or Digital Video Broadcasting for Handhelds, in a bid to avoid any format wars.
But EU telecommunications ministers said it was important to let the market decide which type of mobile TV it prefers. Dow Jones Newswires reported that British Telecom's Minister, Stephen Timms, stated it was too early for a standard to be picked.
While ministers thought that DVB-H was ahead of others in the region, next year will be the crucial time in the growth of mobile TV; many people are expected to use their phones to watch the Beijing Olympics and the European Football Championship.
