Let the confusion begin

Microsoft says that it will be releasing eight (8) different versions of its Windows Server 2008 when it starts shipping in late February. Three of these eight versions will include its Hyper-V, hypervisor technology for virtual servers.

All three of the major server types will be back, including Standard, Enterprise, and Datacenter – these will be offered in both 32bit and 64bit. The pricing for Windows Server 2008 Standard with 5 client access licenses will be US $999, but you can get it for $971 without Hyper-V. The Enterprise version with 25 CALs will retail at US$3,999 and you can get it for $3,971 without the hypervisor. The Datacenter Edition will be licensed by the processor and will have a retail price of US$2,999 with the Hyper-V and $2,971 per processor without the Hyper-V. These will be the six of the eight versions of Windows Server 2008 that will be offered.

In addition, Microsoft will offer Windows Server 2008 for Itanium processors and this version will not include Hyper-V. Microsoft will also be launching Windows Web Server 2008, which is designed to address the needs of internal or external Web hosting, which will be priced at US$469. The Itanium version of Windows Server 2008 will be licensed by the processor and will retail for US$2,999 per processor.
