Supercomputer wars

NEC
has started selling a supercomputer that it claims will challenge world leaders IBM and Cray.

NEC has not made a computer among the top 10 in global rankings of supercomputers, but thinks its new SX-9 delivers peak processing performance at a rate of 839 teraflops. IBM's BlueGene/L at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California is now No. 1 with a performance mark of 280.6 teraflops.

However, even with that teraflop speed there is no guarantee that the NEC machine will rank in the top of the chart, as peak processing speed isn't necessarily reflected in actual use. The SX-9 rents for €18,000 a month.

According to a press release, the SX-9 delivers about 13 times the speed of its SX-8 predecessor and consumes less energy than comparable models.
