Apple has lowered the price of the songs it sells online without copy-protection to US$.99 from US$1.29.

A company press release denied that the move puts Apple closer in line with rival offerings, in particular Amazon.com. The press release said that the DRM free music had been popular with Apple customers and it was decided to make it available at an even more affordable price.

Apple started selling some songs in May without copy protection software. This enabled the music to be played on other music players besides the iPod.
